The Book of Kimono
This book is a bible for all kimono lovers. Everything from how to wear a kimono to its make, essential kimono terms, kimono etiquettes, tips on caring and handling and history, all you need to know about kimono is in here. A section is also dedicated to men's kimono and dressing. This book should practically answer any questions you have about Japanese kimono - a must have for beginners and a book that even professionals come back to.

Design With Japanese Obi
This book is an idea source for using Japanese obi sash as part of the decoration in your home. Through attractive pictures, it demonstrates simple to elaborate ways of arranging the obi as artistic table runners, dining room accents, wall displays, and coverings for furniture in western home. Decorate your holiday home with elegant obi from CHUU!

The Techniques of Japanese Embroidery
Japanese kimono dealers call the embroidery in a decoration "Nui" and when Nui is found on a kimono, they admire it in silent owe because they know how difficult it is to put Nui in kimono and a good Nui decides the kimono's rank. If you have ever been charmed by the beauty of Japanese embroidery, this is the book for you!

Story of the Kimono
Unfortunately this book is currently out of print and is much sought after. This deluxe hardcover book is rich in colour illustration and follows the history of Japanese kimono from Jomon (BC10000) era to Edo period, in great details. There is less about Meiji to contemporary kimono, but this book tells you a lot about Japanese costume history. Recommended for serious collectors, costume designers and kimono dealers.

Textile Art of Japan
The more you learn about kimono, the more you become intrigued by the fabrics that make the stunning garments. This book is a richly illustrated introduction to a variety of traditional textiles that are made in Japan. The book begins with a brief survey of the history of kimono and obi and then takes you through a tour of major textile techniques such as dying, weaving and needleworks as well as covering the materials used for each technique.

Make Your Own Japanese Clothes
Yes, wearing a kimono in formal, traditional Japanese way can be cumbersome at times. This book is filled with hints and ideas of easy, modern ways of wearing kimono. It also gives you helpful step by step instructions on how to make your own creative clothing using Japanese inspiration. Kimono is more fun if you can wear it everyday!

Books on Geisha & Samurai

Memoirs of a Geisha
I've heard a lot about the legal dispute between the author, Arthur Golden and the retired Kyoto Geisha, Mineko Iwasaki who gave him ideas and information for his book, so I was very curious about the story. I have to say I did really enjoy reading it; in fact it was so absorbing that I finished reading it in two days. As Mineko says, perhaps not everything in the book about the traditions of Geisha is factual, especially regarding sensitive subject matters like Mizuage (auctioning virginity) and their relationship with Danna (patrons), but that doesn't change the fact that this book is a great introduction to the mysterious world of Geisha, subtle Japanese symbolism, and most over the novel is very cleverly and beautifully written. The characters are so real that you almost forget that it is fictional!
